The Founder - Nevin Roach
Roach is one who calmly says he was raised by a single mother, but told himself, he knew he had a life to live; will like to make his family proud; be someone other boys could look ‘up’ to; be the male parents would want their daughter to bring home, and overall; leave a good footprint in the global sand.
He started taking piano lessons and music exams at age 10 years via the Trinity College London, Roach progressed through to secondary school with his eyes on the piano to be his instrument of choice, but even though his tutor migrated, his hopes on music were never dashed; then the unexpected happened – he would have his first encounter with pan in 2002.
His sister who was learning to play pan, brought her pan home to practice when he decided to take up the sticks and play around on it, obliviously sounding out the national anthem.
Attending the Bishop’s High School, Tobago, he would eventually gain a golden music opportunity from that tutor, Anthony Moore, becoming a Pan Minor’s Music Literacy Scholarship Program student, where he succeeded at levels 1 and 2 in 2003 to 2004.
In 2006, Roach became captain of the school’s steel orchestra, and also made his debut at the senior national panorama in said year with the Katzenjammers Steel Orchestra.
Fully mesmerised by pan, he also graced six regional steel orchestras as recently as this year, 2020, with the reigning champions for the National Small Conventional Band category, Tobago-based Uptown Fascinators.
After high school, Roach made a residential shift to Barbados, and went on to complete his Bachelors in Computer Science from the UWI, Cave Hill, Barbados, in 2010.
Despite his immersion in pan, Roach’s desirous spirit to be an upstanding role model would see him also loving sports, maintaining focus on its development.
Disciplines: Hockey, Lawn and Table Tennis and Segway Polo. Teams would win world championship titles under his captaincy, presidency, and currently, as vice-president of the Segway Polo Club of Barbados and sports administrator for the Academy of Sport at UWI, Cave Hill.
Barbados opened up a plethora of opportunities for Roach.
A quick learner, he says he is, who easily adapts under any circumstance, thus, during the severe period of the COVID-19 lock-down, Roach’s mind was firing at full throttle, seeing a thought for pannists triggered subsequent to viewing a bit of live entertainment on social media on April 13. This convinced him that he “can do something like this for pan,” and so, the virtual pan competition PanoGrama was born.
